Being a Karma Kagyu isn’t just an exercise in self-enrichment for us…

Picture of someone’s idea of a retreat near Crestone, CO, that the old man instagramed to illustrate this episode of Pulp Buddhism in which the Naropa Prairie Dog Players discuss whether their being a Karma Kagyu is just another exercise in self-enrichment or instead something more ambitious…

Allen begins.

“I chose to be a Karma Kagyu because I saw in Rangjung Rikpe Dorje, the 16th Gyalwa Karmapa, a man of action.”

Allen pauses.

“What he did in his life was incredible in its own right.”

Allen continues.

“Not because he was born a Karmapa, an enlighted being, because the man had the courage to do what needed to be done.”

Virginia replies.

“I see where you are going with this.”

Allen replies.

“Am I wrong to expect our Karmapas to follow in such a man’s footstep?.”

Jonathan replies.

“Heavy weighs the Black Crown indeed.”

Caroline replies.

“It’s all part of the process.”

Jonathan replies.

“Nobody takes on being a Karma Kagyu, guru yoga with all that taking a living, breathing, person, a Karmapa, as your field of merit, all that this entails, as an exercise in self-enrichment.”

Allen replies.

“let’s be honest, given how backwards the people who raised our Karmapas are, monks in monasteries, it’s a triumph that either Yangsi can even manage to not freak out on the rare occasion they are forced to venture out into the real world.”

Virginia replies.

“This is no way to talk about an enlightened being.”

Allen replies.

“I’m just keeping it 100% folks, my bad.”

“It’s just wrong.”

Karl replies.

“More lama talk.”

Karl pauses.

“Come on sheeple, get with program.”

End scene. Fini.

Heavy are the klesha ridden projections, indeed.

  2. I have heard it said that the great 16th openly stated that his next incarnation would be much different from himself. And that the Karmapa is exactly what the beings of the time need.
If we take this as truth then it is our false understanding that is the problem here. Maybe having two Karmapas is a good lesson in our dualistic way of perception?
