The Panama Papers, before the Karmapa controversy, the real scandal…

Dear readers,

Answer me this.

How old was Situ Rinpoche when the 16th Karmapa died?

27 years old.

Shamar Rinpoche?

29.

So much for their “Karmapa controversy.”

Both were played by their 48 year old teacher, Thrangu Rinpoche.

If anyone new their weaknesses it was Rinpoche.

After the 16th Karmapa passed away it was Thrangu Rinpoche whom Chen Li-an reached out to on behalf of the Chinese Government.

The deal that guaranteed that HHDL will be the last Dalai Lama of a Free Tibet, an old score settled for Karma Kagyu of Thrangu Rinpoche’s generation, had nothing to do with either Situ or Shamar Rinpoches.

They had no role to play in any of this?

Other than for show.

Sure, yes, It was indeed quite a spectacle they made of themselves with their “Karmapa controversy,” arguing over who got to ‘recognize’ the 16th Karmapa’s successor,
a competition between children, a sibling-like rivalry, that we can now in retrospect was never more then two young men acting out their differences, while all the world watched them go after each other.

If we examine what in fact happened, how China came to enthrone Ogyen Trinley Dorje as 17th Karmapa, we must admit that they were too young to have been privy to what was really happening, the deal made between the Karma Kagyu sect and the Chinese government to make Ogyen Trinley Dorje 17th Karmapa.

It’s not about the money.

Nobody could have anticipated in the 1980’s China’s economy becoming what it is to day,

The money is the smoking gun.

We know this thanks to the Panama Papers, irrefutable proof a quid pro quo, the windfall from collaborating with the Chinese Government’s occupation.

The Karma Kagyu got what it wanted, the opportunity to re-establish its traditional relationship with the rulers of China.

It was never about the money.

China got what it wanted, control over the recognition over HHDL’s successor.

Oh what a tangled web.

    Tangled web, indeed.

In the process of all this subterfuge on the part of Thrangu Rinpoche this rivalry between Situ and Shamar really hurt anyone in the west who didn’t have access to a good teacher.

    Jamgon Rinpoche killed himself.

Situ Rinpoche was in a high security dramatic exile for a decade.

    Shamar became persona non grata.

After Kalu Rinpoche’s death we were really left out in the cold.

    Cold in a Cold War.

I feel bad for all the sods who missed out while all these small-minded politician lamas fought over their own claims to legitimacy.

What are we going to do now?

I see on Twitter that Tai Situ Rinpoche has arrived on American soil. Now in San Francisco.

Interesting that Prince Ricky isn’t laying claim to Situ Rinpoche as he does with Karmapa!
