The Panama Papers: The jig is up for China’s Billionaire Karmapa…

Dear Readers,

The latest Panama Papers release has the Karma Kagyu sect hiding its windfall from collaborating with China’s occupation of Tibet since 2007.

Perhaps Ogyen Trinley Dorje should think twice before he leaves India to visit France this summer.

The people of France no a thing or two about collaborators.

Paris in 2016 will have nothing but contempt for China’s Billionaire Karmapa.

To say nothing of his risking not being allowed to return to India by the Indian Government for his latest fraud against the people of India.

Regardless, the time has come for Ogyen Trinley Dorje to step down as head of his Karma Kagyu sect and dedicate the rest of his life to solitary retreat.

The jig is up for China’s Billionaire Karmapa.

Well, one can always complain in person to Lama Chodrak, one of the named parties in the hiding of Karmapa’s illegal monies at the North American Kagyu Monlam.

Interestingly he also happens to be Lama Norlha’s cousin.

    All in the family, indeed.

    Noteworthy from his profile:

“Beginning in 1994, he took responsibility for the Kagyu Monlam, putting exceptional efforts into the work of finding sponsors…”

“His Holiness asked Lama Chodrak to serve as the executive director of the Monlam, a responsibility he carries to this day.”

If I were a donor, I would certainly have quite a couple of questions…

And as Karma Kagyu perhaps we have the right to ask our leaders about why this lack of ethics is left uncorrected.

I searched the ICIJ database and while this isn’t the only account linked to a Buddhist organization, it is the only one linked to a Rinpoche in an overt way. Dilyak Drubon Rinpoche. His name is all over this- and as is customary with Tibetans, his family, and as we se above, Lama Chodrak and his family.

Lama Norhla is just finishing the final touches on a grand Maitreya shrine- it likely cost millions. It is convenient that his cousin is linked to this account.

While I am not a follower of Orgyen Trinley Rinpoche as a Karmapa, I do have respect for him as a Buddhist teacher. He seems to be a very friendly and honest master. Nevertheless, I find it deeply troubling that our Karma Kagyu lineage is constantly associated with financial scandals these days. They certainly reflect back on the lineage and Tibetan Buddhism as a whole. It would be very good if Orgyen Trinley Rinpoche could sort out the problems within his organization, but I am not sure whether he actually has the standing that would allow him to do so…

If you pay them, they will come.

BTW, the address of Lama Chodark is interesting:

He gives it as: Kagyupa Int. Monlam Ltd., Flat A, 3F, Lok Chung Mansion 402-404 Lockhart Road, Wanchai, Hong Kong.

Coincidentally, this is the address of a Kagyu Buddhist centre in Hong Kong: Jangchub Phuntsok Ling (see

I wonder if the centre’s Lama or its members are informed that their centre’s address is associated with an offshore entity…
