Open letter to Dzongchen Ponlop Rinpoche on the subject of Jamgon Kongtrul the fourth’s health, safety and welfare

Dear Rinpoche,

I appreciate that neither the 17th Karmapa, the leader of an ethno-nationalistic pro-Chinese, anti-American group of elitist Tibetan exiles living like a law unto themselves in India, nor the former 4th Jamgon Kongtrul’s Labrang care what the Buddhists of America think of what they consider as Tibetans to be none of our business here in the United States, but that being said, you are the 17th Karmapa’s representative to the Buddhists of America, so on behalf of my fellow American Buddhists, I demand that you account for us in detail what exactly happened to Jamgon Kongtrul the fourth, not only from how he came to be recognized by the 17th Karmapa to his decision this year step down as the 4th Jamgon Kongtrul, but most important to us as American Buddhists, his health, safety and welfare since he reached out to us this past August on Facebook in response to the blowback he was experiencing in the aftermath of said decision from the 17th Karmapa, Ogyen Trinley Dorje, whom you are the official representative thereof in the United States of America, with all due respect.

Bill, Why don’t you just simply form a community called “the Buddhists of America.” You could be their guru lama.

If there are so many in agreement with you, as you claim, surely all you need to do is simply walk away. You don’t accept OTD as the Karmapa anyway so why bother with all this? Are you still wanting the lineage to endorse your protest by responding to your personal demands?

I wonder if you actually and secretly hold the view that your “Buddhists of America” are too stupid to think for themselves and can be manipulated through propaganda – hence this blog. I think most people interested in dharma are thinkers and can easily see basic human dignity and respect, and also have a good radar for narcissism.

If the Buddhists of America (BAM from now on) are a group of true practitioners, rather than a handful of disconnected online trolls, then simply prove it by showing us the groups of you who come together to listen to teachings and actually discuss a little dharma. Convince us by showing us your actual knowledge of how to transform the mind.

As Shunryu Suzuki put it so well: “Buddhism is passed from warm hand to warm hand.”

Without that, you are simply pretentious.

    • What is it to you what we do?

    • Tenzin Samten

Living BAM: legendary jazz musician and composer Herbie Hancock, poet dakini Anne Waldman, Star Trek actor George Takei, monks and nuns of many traditions, some living as actual mendicants in forests, countless ethnic Buddhists, many generations of practitioners, west and east, ageing Jew-Bu’s, young psychedelic hippie types taking precious refuge, hitching rides, queer friendlies, real gom-chens, you and me, so many others, tulku fanatics, dare I say Steven Seagal, Jetsunma, &c. In other words, creative people, with consciences. BAM doing the right thing!

I agree and based on that logic then, what is it to you what The Karmapa does?

    • Why the Buddhists of America need concern themselves with a group of Tibetan men, pro-Chinese, anti-American, pro-dictatorship, anti-democracy ethno-nationalistist Buddhists living in exile in India, where the are a law unto themselves, funded by members of the Chinese community whom support the Chinese Communist Party’s attempt to rebrand their dictatorship into their being the leader of the Buddhist world, hiding untold sums of money in offshore accounts, with a history of child trafficking, endangerment and abuse, and their 17th Karmapa, their leader, Ogyen Trinley Dorje, and his representative in the United States of America, Dzogchen Ponlop Rinpoche, teaching Buddhism in our country is obvious, this is the United States of America, and this is not how we do Buddhism in our country, we hold ourselves as Buddhists to a standard of transparency, inclusiveness, and accountability of which Ogyen Trinley Dorje has proven himself to have nothing but contempt for as 17th Karmapa.

Was the 16th Karmapa, not then also involved in child trafficking, as you put it? Why the reverence for him?

On a much more basic level your use of just one period at the end of that rabid drool seems to point out your difficulties with clear thinking. Generally unclear thinking and megalomania point to a personality disorder (in the most generous case) if not full blown mental illness. If I had to guess I would put my money on undiagnosed paranoid schizophrenia.

Letters making demands on religious leaders really looks bad. Especially on behalf of a unified American Buddhist Community that has never existed. What exactly do the Sakya, Nyingma or Gelug care about internal Kagyu problems? Why in the world would the various Theravadin and Mahayana traditions care about what is going on?

I suggest a hobby or reading something other than dharma books. It appears as if you suffer from a dharma illness- perhaps a rlung disorder?

When was the last time you got laid? I’d try that first- as your old lady to help you out with that. Even if it’s just a handjob in the car. You need some kind of release, man.

        • Prior to Thrangu, Akong and Khenpo Karthar Rinpoches’ collaborating with the Chinese Communist Party to make Ogyen Trinley Dorje 17th Karmapa in 1992 it wasn’t child trafficking, Jamgon Kongtrul the fourth’s parents fled Tibet and gave him to the 17th Karmapa for fear that the Chinese Communist Party was going to turn him into the next Panchen Lama, something as Tibetans loyal to HHDL they couldn’t live with, thus we must distinguish between the trafficking of Jamgon Kongtrul the Fourth as an infant, and the time honored Tibetan tradition of free Tibet that the 16th Karmapa introduced us to in the United States of America, and we have thus adapted to our culture, I just watched the other evening a story on CBS news about a child of Tibetan Americans living in Minneapolis, Minnesota recognized by Yongey Mingyur Rinpoche as a reincarnation, we don’t traffic in child reincarnations whereas the Chinese Communist Party and their choice for 17th Karmapa, Ogyen Trinley Dorje, does traffic in children, a perfect example being his collaborating with the Chinese Communist Party to condemn a child to what Jamgon Kongtrul the Fourth’s parents fled with him to India to escape, when he recognized a reincarnation of Traleg Rinpoche and he gave him to the Chinese Communist Party to raise as their own, just take a moment to appreciate the irony of this, in 1999 Ogyen Trinley Dorje “escaped” the very same Chinese Communist Party he in 2015 collaborated to effectively end the Traleg succession as we knew it up to Rinpoche’s death in 2012, which disgusts me as someone who knew Traleg Rinpoche.

          • karma

I thought the 16th Karmapa recognised numerous reincarnations within Tibet, even after he had fled to the west. Am I mistaken?

            • Deng Xiaoping came to power in 1979 so it would have been without the approval of the United Front Work Department of the Chinese Communist Party so it would have been an act of defiance to do so, the fact of the matter though the UFWD didn’t turn Akong Rinpoche until after HHK16 passed away, Akong Rinpoche’s first trip to occupied Tibet as a guest of the Chinese Communist Party in 1983, the first “living Buddha” for be recognized by CCP was Ogyen Trinley Dorje, which is the point at which we can say that the practice ceased to be Tibetan tradition and became child trafficking as such.

Well done Sherlock. Not sure if you read this line?

“…the dialect is thought to have been identified from north of Thailand.”

Please try not to get hysterical and blame KKR for absolutely everything that sucks in the world.

      • karma

So basically, they can’t own it any more than you can because Thailand is not in Tibet.

          • It’s all the same toxic Buddhist ethno-nationalism, right church wrong pew perhaps, but all the same relevant to any discussion of Jamgon Kongtrul the 4th’s welfare given we know nothing of what he endured at his monastery, we can only hope he wasn’t abused, but we can’t assume that he wasn’t given what happened to Kalu Yangsi in his monastery, he was gang raped by its monks, another layer of this very same discussion of the toxic Buddhist ethno-nationalism which so concerns the Buddhists of America, but not the 17th Karmapa, Dzogchen Ponlop Rinpoche, KTD and its affiliate centers.

      • I couldn’t bring myself to click a link to a video of a child being beaten, my bad, I will gladly own this, that being said HHK17, Dzogchen Ponlop Rinpoche, KTD and its affiliate centers to date have yet to speak to the Buddhist of America on the subject of Jamgon Kongtrul the 4th’s welfare, we can only assume that he remains in hiding, and at risk of being handed over to the UFWD of the CCP which will force him to become one of their living Buddhas, not that this is any concern to you apparently, more committed to supporting the toxic pro-Chinese, anti-American Buddhist ethno-nationalism of HHK17’s Karma Kagyu sect of Tibetan Buddhism than human decency, well played.
