The latest on China’s preparations for the 17th Karmapa’s return to Tsurphu

I submit for your consideration from the Global Times “Living Buddhas speak up in politics in Tibet” as it pertains to the 17th Karmapa’s return to Tsurphu Monastery, specifically the role he was recognized as China’s first “living Buddha” in 1992 to fulfill, and that which in all honesty he is best suited for, a member of China’s Tibetan political ruling elite.

having read several posts about the karmapa, i am not encouraged to jion the karma kagyu, but i do wonder if the return to china might eventually lead to a sea change in chinese culture back to a buddhist society. perhaps i am being naive, but perhaps the chinese communists have allowed the greek horse into the citidel without realizing that is will change china.

There are lots of Chinese Buddhists and many in the government are Buddhist. They are actively pushing for change and in general would like Buddhist teachers to return to Tibet. Many Buddhist teachers still feel connected to Tibet and the Tibetan people so they are happy that they get a chance to help their countrymen. A sure sign of a non spiritual person is someone who holds a grudge. A true lama is someone who is always looking to establish peaceful relations with everyone. It’s good and natural that dharma should return to China and it’s good and natural that the Chinese people should welcome it. I’m not sure why anyone has an issue with this. Things change and evolve.

    • It is worth noting that the Global Times is run by the Chinese Government.

What it describes is a travesty which must be condemned, not praised as a change for the better.

Thus the issue with the 17th Karmapa returning the Black Crown to Tsurphu Monastery.

  3. It is obvious that all media in china is controlled by the state. My wish is for the crown to remain in the free world 🌎 free for all to see and for the seeds of enlightenment to be planted. Not just for those who can go to Tsurphu. Instead of condemning I choose to make possible wishes for the benefit of all.

    • As was the wish of the 35 year old 16th Karmapa in 1959 when he removed the Black Crown from Tsurphu monastery.

All of which brings us back to today’s 31 year old 17th Karmapa returning the Black Crown to Tsurphu monastery.

After the 57 year old 16th Karmapa died in 198, my guru, 57 year old Khenpo Karthar Rinpoche decided it was time to return the Black Crown to Tsurphu monastery.

In 1976 Mao died and Khenpo Karthar Rinpoche saw in his successor’s reforms sufficient cause to return the Black Crown to Tsurphu monastery.

In 1992 to this end, with the approval of the Chinese Government, along with 59 year old Thrangu and 53 year old Akong Rinpoche, 68 year old Khenpo Karthar Rinpoche enthroned at Tsurphu monastery a 7 year child, today’s 31 year old 17th Karmapa.

In 1999 the Chinese Government allowed the then 14 year old 17th Karmapa to leave Tsurphu with the intention to retrieve the Black Crown from India and return it to Tsurphu monastery.

In 2017 93 year old Khenpo Karthar Rinpoche, along with his Chinese Government supported Karma Kagyu establishment, expects us to see in his 31 year Karmapa the successor of the late 16th Karmapa whom 58 years ago removed the Black Crown from Tsurphu Monastery.

Thus the necessity of our discussion here of the return of the Black Crown to Tsurphu Monastery which with the Indian Government’s decision to allow the 31 year old 17th Karmapa to visit Sikkim this year brings us one step closer to realizing 93 year old Khenpo Karthar Rinpoche’s ambition of returning the Black Crown to Tsurphu Monastery.

That today it is only a matter of time, not whether or not the Black Crown should be returned to Tsurphu monastery, end here with us.

This is not the end which the then 35 year old 16th Karmapa in 1959 removed the Black Crown from Tsurphu monastery for, to allow the very same China he fled, controlled by the very same dictatorship he escaped 58 years ago to have that which he risked his very life to deny it to without our at the very least questioning the wisdom of his successor as Karmapa, the 31 year old 17th Karmapa doing so.

  4. For those who missed the link: http://www.globaltimes.cn/content/1028816.shtml
“Padma Namgyel, vice chairman of the regional political advisory body, said the fact that many proposals have become realities has helped maintain religious stability in Tibet.
Many members of the advisory body proposed that more monasteries, for example, Tsurpu [!!], Drigung, Talung and Pashod monasteries, should be brought under state protection programs, said Namgyel…”
