The late Karmapa had a first vision about the whereabouts of the 12th Situpa, but they were not sufficient to find him. In Thrangu Rinpoche’s biography of the 16th Karmapa as told by Khenpo Karthar Rinpoche we learn that for seven days the late Karmapa did a Mahākāla retreat (drubchö) and then had a clearer and more detailed vision about the place of Situpas reincarnation. But in almost all other cases the alte Karmapa did not have to do a devination nor a special practice in order to find reincarnations http://www.ktdpublications.com/the-lives-of-the-karmapas/ (I got the teaching on CD, KTD sells this as well) .
