The 16th Karmapa recognized his nephew as Sharmapa, succession by mutual recognition.

It should be interesting to see how KTD plays what has become a controversial subject for us.

How to raise a Tulku?

HHK17 failed miserably with his handling of JKR4th’s ‘disrobing’ and subsequent disapperance.

  1. Spiritual Tourist

the 11th or so Shamarpa was son of the 15th Karmapa…

  2. Yes and if the next sharmapa is the 17ths son then I could hardly imagine any problems with abuse or allegations of stealing children, could you?

But won’t avoid accusations of nepotism, alas. Which some would argue was the real cause of the Karmapa controversy.

      • Oh, interesting, how do you feel nepotism contributed to the controversy?

You know. The 16th Karmapa’s nephews reckoning that it was up to them to decide who the 17th Karmapa would be. A major problem with the Tulku system is that it is sometimes difficult for a family enriched thru the institution to give it up to the next holder.

  3. Well I guess you are sometimes damned if you do and also if you don’t. I have the feeling that Karmapa Thaye Dorje will be just fine.
