A question for China’s 17th Karmapa (he’s hanging with Lama Karma on Instagram) do you support Liu Xiaobo and Charter ’08, yes or no?

You can’t possibly expect any religious leader who lets representatives of his faith marry their students (e.g. Ponlop Rinpoche and Lama Karma) with all the confused ethics and power dynamics involved that this represents to care about much.

    • Is that what is happening?

You tell me? All these decisions illustrate a deft lack of skill on the part of our lamas as well as a fingering of the nose at our democratic values.

If Karmapa has such an issue with our culture and value system he should stay in Asia. Why even entertain these selfish operatives?

        • Buddhism has no history with Democracy which has been to China’s advantage as it pertains to the 17th Karmapa. As such this is simply what the harmonization of Buddhism and Dictatorship looks like today. The 17th Karmapa at 32 years of age was not born and raised to enjoy the privileged life he lives in the West today but nonetheless he is quite typical of a young person of his station in Chinese society as such, privileged and incapable of thinking critically of the inequality and injustice of the privilege he enjoys. This can change but this is where he’s at so far in his spiritual journey.
